The last turtle hatchling
was released on 31 January 2019 along the Araguari River.
It was the last from
837 eggs that we rescued from flooding between 1 and 6 December 2018.
Here is the story of
our rush to save the flooded turtle nests.

Foi o último de 837 ovos

The season started
well, with nine nesting beaches and 104 turtle nests being monitored by the
local communities.
But, in less than 24
hours between 1 and 2 December 2018, the river level rose up more than a
meter along at least 60 km of rivers. During the next few days levels continued to rise, submersing turtle nesting beaches with
over 318 turtle nests.

A temporada começou bem,
com nove praias de nidificação e 104 ninhos sendo monitoradas pelas
comunidades locais.
Mas, em menos de 24
horas, entre os dias 01 e 02 de dezembro de 2018 o nível dos rios subiu mais
de 1 m, em 60 km de rios. Durante os próximos dias, os níveis continuaram subindo, alagando praias de nidificação de tracajás incluindo mais de 318 ninhos ainda
com ovos que não haviam eclodido.

We managed to recover
and incubate flooded eggs. Although not all the eggs survived, we returned 599
hatchlings to the rivers where theirs nests were.
But sadly, at least 86% of nests (3853 eggs) were lost due to the flooding. |
Conseguimos recuperar e
incubar ovos alagados. Embora nem todos os ovos tenham sobrevivido,
devolvemos 599 filhotes aos rios onde estavam seus ninhos.
